Defense Great, Offense… Ugh!
What a game! The Cowboys defense was outstanding, shutting down a very good Tampa Bay running game, pressuring Garcia out of the pocket all day long, and guarding against the deep ball with a secondary full of rookies and 2nd-year backups. But look at who was in the game. Remember last year, when the Cowboys spent two 7th-round picks on DBs Alan Ball and Courtney Brown? Well those two youngsters saw extensive playing time Sunday. When Anthony Henry went down in the 2nd quarter, that meant that the Cowboys were without their top 3 corners (Newman injured and Pacman stupid), and they had their 4th, 5th, and 6th string corners (rookie Mike Jenkins, rookie Orlando Scandrick, and Alan Ball) playing in their nickel defense, with Courtney Brown getting a lot of playing time at strong safety due to injuries to Original Roy and Pat Watkins. That defense was also without last year’s first-round pick, pass rusher, Anthony Spencer. But despite all these injuries, they have up 262 yards and 9 points. (Note: The Bucs are currently averaging 341.2 yards per game.) The Dallas D gave up only 49 yards rushing, or 2.4 yards per rushing play. (Note: The Bucs average 120.2 yards rushing per game). This was outstanding defense against a strong offensive team. This is more than you could ask for from a defense with all those injuries. But what about the offense? Oh, that’s a different story.

Even if they improve, will they win?
Obviously the Cowboys have had problems lately, and obviously they’re trying to get it fixed, but even if they do get it fixed right now, the Bucs can be quite a challenge for a team with the Cowboys’ injury situation. So let’s assume for the moment that the Cowboys come out and play good solid football Sunday at Texas Stadium. Can they beat the Bucs?

Just Ugly
Looking at the Cowboys/Rams game… honestly, it was hard even to watch. I’m not one of those fans that freaks out every time the Cowboys lose, and unlike most Cowboys fans, I don’t assume the worst in regard to every situation or come up with all sorts of uninformed criticisms any time anything goes wrong. But Good Lord, that was ugly. Announcers and analysts kept saying that we shouldn’t put this all on Brad Johnson, and while that’s true — the team as a whole played badly — we still must recognize that this was one incredibly horrible quarterbacking performance. Brad was missing open receivers all day long. Why was that? Maybe it was because his mechanics were awful. Did you notice… on a number of throws, when Brad had plenty of time in the pocket, he just didn’t bother to set his feet and slung the ball — all arm — like he thought he was Brett Favre or something. It was the kind of thing you never saw from Brad Johnson when he played for TB or Minn. So what happened? He got so old he forgot how to set his feet? I understand if he can’t throw the 20-yard out or hit the 55 yard bomb. That’s fine. But I don’t understand throwing consistently behind receivers because you don’t use proper form, especially when you don’t have any pressure from the pass rush.

Buy Low and Sell High
If you’re running the Dallas Cowboys right now, one incredible opportunity has to be flashing brightly in front of your eyes: Dick Nolan’s son Mike is available right now. He made a name for himself running a great 3-4 defense in Baltimore. And your 3-4 has been struggling in a couple of areas. On top of all that, you’re going to need another defensive coordinator for when Jason Garrett takes over as head coach. Nolan couldn’t cost much right now, though coaches’ salaries don’t count against the salary cap anyway. So where are you going to see a better opportunity to improve your defense, both now and in the future?
