Suspicious Timing

Everybody knows that Larry Allen has to retire to as a Cowboy. And today’s headlines say that the Cowboys signed him yesterday so that he can retire. Hmmm… Didn’t the Cowboys just lose a starting guard for several weeks? And how did they sign LA with a full roster of 75 men already on the team? Oh, I see… they cut Adam Stenavich, a backup guard.

So they lost a starting guard till mid-October, they signed LA (just so he could retire), and they cut a young guard to make room for him to retire.

Somewhere in the mind of Jerry Jones is the thought that LA, at 36 years of age, is better than any backup guard on the team. Of course, the possibility exists that Jones signed him so that he would be on the Cowboys’ reserve/retirement list… so that if the backup guards (Montrae Holland, Pat McQuistan, Joe Berger, Cory Proctor) don’t get the job done in the first game or two, they can call up ol’ Larry and get him back at the Ranch.

We’ve all seen the headline that the Cowboys signed him so he could retire, but I haven’t heard the retirement announcement yet. Have you? Just a thought.

Don’t be a Fool, Shawne

The courage of a warrior. Never yield to pain, never yield to fear, never let your body tell your heart when to quit. I get it. I really do. But this isn’t courage. This is pure foolishness. I’m referring, of course, to Shawne Merriman’s decision to play the season with the posterior cruciate and lateral collateral ligaments in his left knee both torn. I love to see a guy put it all on the line. That’s what it’s all about to me. But this is just dumb. He went to 4 doctors. They all told him to have season-ending surgery. He’s going to destroy his career. He’s going to put an early end to something that could have been historic. Does he really understand what these ligaments do? They hold the various bones and cartilage of the knee in place. Without them, the resulting instability could destroy the cartilage in his knee. His coaches should stop him. His friends and family should stop him. This isn’t courage. Courage is that character trait of a person who’s scared out of his mind, but perseveres anyway. Foolishness is the guy who sees terrible trouble down the road… and keeps going.

Thoughts on week 4 of Preseason

When I watch a game, I usually have a lot to say. So I’ve got the laptop in my recliner with me, dribbling out my thoughts on the Cowboys’ 4th preseason game as I watch it. Of course, the 4th game is always the most anti-climactic moment of the year, because we’re getting so close to the season, and we’ve finally started to see teams show a little bit of what they can do, and now… the teams go into this game with one priority: don’t get any important injuries. So all the informed fan can do is try to learn something about the youngsters on the bubble. Well, it’s kickoff time, so here goes: Read the rest of this entry »

Interesting Trade

The Cowboys just traded a 2010 5th-round pick for guard Montrae Holland. This guy was a starter last year in Denver after spending 4 years as a backup in New Orleans. Seems like a guy that can contribute. Of course, this happened because of the injury to starting guard Kyle Kosier, but Kosier will be back in 6 weeks or so. That makes for an interesting situation when cutting down to 53 this weekend. Let’s see: The Cowboys have to keep Kosier and Holland for that left guard position, with Big Leonard Davis at right guard. Andre Gurode is in the middle, and the current interior backups are Joe Berger and Cory Proctor playing center and guard, with Pat McQuistan playing guard as well as tackle. Even if you only count McQuistan as a tackle, you still have 6 guys on the interior line. We informed fans are aware that the Cowboys are searching for the future left tackle in McQuistan, Doug Free, and James Marten, and they obviously can’t cut their starting tackles Flozell Adams and Marc Colombo, so that give the Cowboys 11 linemen that they’d really like to keep. Um… One problem: They can’t afford to keep 11 linemen. So whom do they cut? Tough call. I’d hate to see them lose a potential starting left tackle so McQuistan, Free, and Marten should stay. That means they would have to cut Proctor or Berger. Problem with that is: What if Gurode goes down? You’ve only got one player left who can snap the ball, and he has almost no experience in actual NFL games. And what if he gets into his first game replacing Gurode, and tweaks his ankle and has to come out for a few plays? Uh… ???
I don’t like having only two guys who can play center on the roster. So maybe they have to let go of one of their young tackles. But they drafted Free and Marten last year; it’s too early to give up on that investment. And McQuistan is versatile and can back up more than one position. Decisions like this drive coaches and GMs nuts. I say they have to choose between Berger and Proctor, and let the other one go.

Another interesting thing about this trade is that it wasn’t a 2009 5th-round pick, but a 2010 5th-rounder that the Cowboys gave up for Holland.
