Gunslingers’ Opening Night In General Admission

Sportsdate 5 – 25 – 2008

At 6:45 pm I find myself standing on the road in Spring Lake Park waiting to buy tickets for the opening night of the Texarkana Gunslingers baseball team. The line is painfully slow, but optimism is high as a bigger than expected crowd has showed up. The child bride and I have four kids with us to share an evening of what was once America’s pastime. As slow is the line is moving my concern is whether we get in the park past the time of the opening pitch. Read the rest of this entry »

Will Barry’s Most Golden Moment

Sportsdate 5 – 10 – 2008

The first time I ever saw Will Barry run was in 2004. I was working the timing stand at the Hawk Relays over in Pleasant Grove. When the gun went up for the varsity boys 1600 meters, a fellow timer pointed out the fact that a Pleasant Grove eighth grader was being allowed to compete unofficially.

The little pre-high schooler ran away from the varsity field that afternoon. Last night he won the 1600 meters in the Class 3A meet in Austin. The next time he runs he will be wearing the maroon and white for Texas A & M University. Read the rest of this entry »

General Thoughts on the Draft

Jags: How about the Jags’ aggressiveness in the draft. I’m normally not a fan of trading up into the top 10, but with a team that has almost all the pieces in place, I can understand doing whatever you have to do to get the final piece. They needed pass rush, so they traded up from the 26th spot to the 8th spot to take Derrick Harvey, and they traded up from the 58th spot to the 52nd spot to make sure they got Quentin Groves. I respect the commitment to drafting pass rush. And if you look at those two trades in light of the old draft trade value chart, the Jags got a good deal on both trades. They must have found teams that were really wanting to trade down. And if this added pass rush finally gets the necessary pressure on Peyton Manning and helps them beat the Colts to compete for the AFC South title, giving them a chance at home field in a playoff game or two, then whatever they paid was worth it. I like the aggressiveness they showed to go after that last element they needed. Read the rest of this entry »

Cowboys Draft

I know the fans were all enraged because Dallas didn’t draft a star WR, but take note that no other teams did either. No WRs at all in the first round for the first time in history. What does that tell you? If the guy’s not there, you can’t draft him. Everyone says they should have taken a young receiver who’ll be the new Terry Glenn. But uh… who would that be? Of course, Texas fans all think Limas Sweed is the greatest receiver in the world, but I’d guess there was probably a reason he was picked 53rd instead of going in the top 10. And by the same token, all the Michigan fans think Mario Manningham is the big star, and the Michigan St. fans say it’s Devin Thomas. Me, I’m an LSU fan so I think Early Doucet is WAY underrated. But realistically, who was the Marvin Harrison of this draft? Who could Dallas have taken that had a legitimate chance of winning a starting job on a team that ranked 4th in passing yardage last year, even without Terry Glenn? You may not think Patrick Crayton is a good starter, but he caught 50 balls for 697 yards in an offense that focuses on Terrell Owens and Jason Witten. That’s pretty impressive. Who was gonna beat that production while competing with T.O. and Witten for catches? Donnie Avery? James Hardy? Malcolm Kelly? I can understand the Cowboys’ reasoning there. They didn’t see a guy they felt confident could beat what they already have. Makes sense to me. Read the rest of this entry »
