What The MFFL? Avery Fired?
Sportsdate 4 -30 -2008
One of the many Maverick marketing campaigns put in motion during the Mark Cuban regime was the Mavs Fan For Life, or MFFL t-shirts. I found myself muttering something similiar for the past ten days as the glorious return of the franchise to NBA relevence came to an end, and Avery Johnson was fired. Read the rest of this entry »

Time for the Draft!
It’s finally time. We can finally end the hype and find out what’s really going on. We know the Dolphins have decided on Jake Long, and it’s been reported that the Rams are going to draft DE Chris Long from Virginia. I think that’d be a good pick.
I’ll have comments on this thread throughout the day, so feel free to chime in at any time.

Trade Possibilities in the Draft
We’ve all read a zillion mock drafts, and really, that’s what April is for. But mock drafts have one major drawback. They can’t take into account the trades that take place during the draft. But I thought it might be fun to speculate a bit about what trades might happen this weekend. First off, we know that trading into the top 5 isn’t a popular idea among NFL executives because you have to pay so much to get there, and once you get there you have to guarantee $30 million to some guy who’s never played a snap of pro football. It’s a 2-headed problem, and there’s no way around it. Still… some teams might go to extremes to get Glenn Dorsey or Matt Ryan. So let’s look at who might be tempted to trade up, or willing to trade down in the 1st round. Read the rest of this entry »

The Pacman Clause
This has got to be the most unusual trade I’ve ever seen. The stipulations, according to the Cowboys website, are as follows:
1. Dallas gives Tennessee its 4th-round pick in this weekend’s draft.
2. If Pacman is reinstated before the season and no other suspensions occur, then Dallas gives Tenneessee its 6th-round pick in the 2009 draft.
3. If Pacman is NOT reinstated before the season, Tennessee gives Dallas its 4th-round pick in the 2009 draft.
4. If Pacman messes up again and gets yet another suspension during next season, Tennessee gives Dallas its 5th-round pick next year.
So… Let’s look at each scenario from the perspective of what it would cost Dallas and what Dallas would receive. Read the rest of this entry »

What’s Gonna Happen in the Draft?
So the Fish have decided on an offensive lineman for the first pick of the draft. It’s great to see that happen this early. And now that we know which direction the Dolphins have gone, I can cut 5 branches off my 6-way mock draft. So here’s how I think the 1st round shakes out now (Note: there are only 31 picks in the 1st round because the Pats were stripped of a pick for spying on the Jets.):
1. Dolphins: Jake Long, OT Michigan. Already done, nice pick that should help to protect last year’s 2nd-round QB John Beck. Read the rest of this entry »

Draft/Offseason thoughts for the Day
Check out the Chiefs’ situation: Adding their own picks to the picks they just acquired for Jared Allen, they have the 5th, 17th, 35th, 66th, 73rd, and 82nd picks. They desperately need an offensive tackle, but with the depth at that position in this draft they know they can grab one with the 17th pick, or possibly in the 2nd round. Therefore, they don’t have to go OT with the 5th pick. That means they can use the 5th pick to help their D-line or possibly even take QB Matt Ryan (Boston College). Of course… now that they’ve traded Allen, they need a pass-rusher. One strategy might be to go after a pass-rusher early, then an OT at 17, and try to get a QB like Chad Henne, Brian Brohm, or Joe Flacco in the 2nd round. Of course, they could stay with Brodie Croyle under center if they still believe in him. But they have plenty of chances to fill their many needs. Read the rest of this entry »

Here’s another genius
So picture this: You’re a backup running back for the Indianapolis Colts. Last year, in your rookie season, you averaged a respectable 4.4 yards per carry on 121 carries, and you caught 13 passes and scored 4 TDs. You made a legitimate contribution to one of the best teams in football, and everything looks bright in your future.
Then in the offseason, at about 3 a.m., police officers come and ask you to leave the parking lot of a club that just closed.
What do you do?
A. Pick this moment to stage a protest, repeatedly saying “I’m a Colts player” and “I haven’t done anything wrong” until you finally get arrested for disorderly conduct, resisting law enforcement, etc., resulting in a probable suspension from the league.
B. Say “Okay, Officer, we’ll be on our way now.”
Believe it or not, Kenton Keith chose option A. Smart move, huh?

Draft Dilemmas
A couple of weeks ago, I started working on a what I call a 3-way mock draft. The point of it was to see what might happen if the Dolphins spent the first pick on DE Chris Long as most of the media were insisting they would, compared with what might happen if they went either of a couple of other directions. So far, the process has been a lot of fun, but the myriad possibilities are dizzying because each of the top 6 teams have so many needs to fill and the top few players all seem to fit those needs in so many different ways. Some players fit better in a 4-3 than a 3-4, but have the ability to do either and possess tremendous talent. Some teams already have great talent in the position where the best players exist, but taking the best player available is always a good idea. And since there seem to be 6 players that are perceived to be the best, and since each of the first 6 teams have so many needs, I think almost any of the top 6 players could fit with any of the first 6 teams. It became clear that a 3-way mock wasn’t enough. Maybe a 6-way mock would be better. So because of the team dilemmas in this year’s draft class, I’m not even close to finished with my 6-way mock, but I thought I’d share the concepts that are making it so difficult this year.
