On The Scene With The Battle Wings
Sportsdate 3 – 30 – 2008
Saturday night found my family and I renewing our relationship with the Bossier – Shreveport Battle Wings. We loaded up the SUV with our crew and a neighbor kid for the hour and fifthteen ride to the Century Tel Center on the banks of the Red River. Read the rest of this entry »

Longhorn Spring Game
Sportsdate 3 – 29 – 2008
Fox Southwest broadcast the Texas Longhorn Spring football game this afternoon. I would not want to be Mack Brown and Greg Davis in the fall. Many of the Longhorns best game breakers are in back-up positions right now. Read the rest of this entry »

Offseason/Draft thoughts
So much of the talk about the offseason and the draft is accepted as fact, when it’s not even decent rumor. So much of it doesn’t make sense, but people accept it, then blame the teams for not doing what they were supposed to do. 2 years ago it was a foregone conclusion that the Texans were going to take Reggie Bush with the first pick in the draft. Then, the night before the draft, the Texans announced they were taking Mario Williams. Everyone said they were idiots. Then in the 2006 season, Mario and Reggie both had average rookie years, and everyone still said Reggie would still be great, and Mario would still be worthless. Then in 2007, Mario dominated the league, and Reggie didn’t get any better. Now people are finally admitting that Mario might not have been the worst pick. So here are my thoughts on where the pre-draft talk is going seriously awry. I also threw in some other offseason/draft thoughts that have been circling around in my football-engrossed brain. My March Madness
Sportsdate 3 – 25 – 2008
As a sports fan I know that I am supposed to be looking at my brackets over and over again these days. I did not even fill out a bracket this year, I rarely do. This March as I have every spring since 1972, I find myself instead paying more attention to what is going on with the Texas Rangers spring training. Read the rest of this entry »

Everybody Wants to Play for the Raiders
Have you seen the Raiders’ offseason moves? It’s an amazing spectacle. They’re loading their roster with talented but not quite stellar players, and paying them as if they’re the best players in the league. It can’t possibly be good for the team in the long term, but it will produce a talented team in 2008. Here are some of their signings (I listed the franchise tag price for some of these positions because the franchise tag price is the average of the top 5 salaries at a given position): Read the rest of this entry »

Cowboys Offseason
The first thing a team has to do in the offseason is figure out how to address their personnel needs. Coming into the offseason, the Cowboys did a good job of securing their best players with long-term contracts to avoid losing them in the free agent market, locking up Witten, Gurode, and Romo during the season, and Flozell afterward. The only players they lost in free agency were RB Julius Jones, DBs Jacques Reeves, Nate Jones, and Keith Davis, and cut FB Oliver Hoyte. And they didn’t even bother to tender RB Tyson Thompson. It hurts to lose Keith Davis because of his special teams value, but he wanted to play where he could compete for a starting safety position. They’ll obviously need a running back or two, and they’ll have to replace the depth they lost in the secondary. They still have CBs Evan Oglesby and Alan Ball, and safety Courtney Brown, but it would be nice to see them add some talent that could contribute this year. But they haven’t lost anyone who seems too difficult to replace. Here’s an overview of what they have and what they need: Read the rest of this entry »

Let Me Start A Trade Rumor!!
The top 4 picks in the draft this year belong (in order) to Miami, St. Louis, Atlanta, and Oakland. Since Miami has Ronnie Brown, St. Louis has Steven Jackson, and Atlanta just gave starter money to Michael “the alleged burner” Turner, it’s unlikely that any of the first 3 teams will pick Darren McFadden. That means that the Raiders, who are always looking for a way to make a splash, would have the chance to select the most hyped guy in the draft. They couldn’t possibly pass up the biggest splash of the day. But there’s a problem with that logic. Selecting McFadden would be an excellent decision at that point, and if there’s one thing we know about the draft, it’s that, at some point in the first round, the Raiders are going to do something stupid.
So I began to ask: how can the Raiders screw this up? And after several days of pondering this question, the obvious answer dawned on me. Call it a prediction, but here it is: Read the rest of this entry »

Green Day
Sportsdate 3 – 15 – 2008
The grass on George Dobson field literally sparkled under the sunshine this afternoon. I finally got to catch a few innings of TC Bulldog baseball this afternoon as they swept a double header from the Angelina College Roadrunners. Read the rest of this entry »
