Observations on week 8

Everyone is talking about how the Pats are running up the score against teams. I’ll defend the Pats on this issue. First off, anybody who whines that the other team is beating them too badly doesn’t belong in the NFL. It’s a tough league. Suck it up! If you don’t want to be beaten so badly, then play better. And if a team is so scared of having excessive points scored against it, then why not just forfeit the game when it gets out of hand? That would certainly not be any more wuss-ish than crying about the score afterward. I mean… when was the last time you heard a boxer whine because the other guy beat up on him too badly? And in the Olympics, if a sprinter has a chance to set a world record, but his competition isn’t fast enough, should he slow down to have mercy on the weaklings? There’s no crying in football! But that’s not the real issue here. Look at it from the Pats perspective. I believe that in order to be a truly dominant team (the kind of team we haven’t seen in years in the NFL), you have to approach each game with a “no mercy” attitude. And how can Belichick tell his team to be merciless if he has mercy on the opponent? Furthermore, I remember a playoff game where the Houston Oilers had a 32 point lead halfway through the 3rd quarter and lost. But, and be honest now, if the Oilers, with a 32 point lead, had come out throwing aggressively down the field late in the third quarter, don’t you think the whiners would have been out en masse to cry that the Oilers were running up the score? I wonder if the Oilers would have preferred to be called poor sportsmen, rather than be eliminated from the playoffs? Of course, a 45 point lead with 7 minutes left is a different situation, but still, mercy has no place in the NFL. Read the rest of this entry »

Who’s Gonna Win… And Why: Week 8

Scott's Picks for this weeks games. Add your own or comment on what you readDetroit at Chicago: I see 3 major issues that raise questions in this matchup. First, the Lions started the year without a running game, leading them into too much pressure on their quarterback and, consequently, too many turnovers. They seem to have adopted a running game recently, and that seems to have cut down on their turnovers, but I’m not convinced they’ll keep that up. If they start turning it over again, the Bears will beat them. Secondly, the Bears have had injury troubles at cornerback. Charles Tillman returned to practice this week and will likely play, but will he be 100%? And Nathan Vasher is still a question mark coming into the weekend nursing a groin injury. If the Bears don’t have their corners against the awesome group of WRs Detroit will bring to town, then there could be a serious matchup problem in the passing game. If the Bears don’t feel they have to corners to get away with blitzing, then they’ll have to get pressure on Kitna with their 4-man front. I think they can do that, but if they give him too much time, he’ll be hitting big plays all day long. The third issue is the Bears offense. Griese looks to be settling in, but can he finally bring the consistency the Bears need at that position? And if the Bears running game stalls again, can Griese carry the offense by himself without turning the ball over? Looking at all these issues, I think the game will be determined by turnovers. So I’ll play the pressure defense with home field advantage. I’ll take the Bears. Read the rest of this entry »

Observations on Week 7

Sunday I set my Tivo to record the Titans/Texans because I expected that to be one of the best games of the day. Then… the Texans sputtered and flailed badly, not moving the ball at all, and turning the ball over again and again, eventually giving the Titans a 32-7 lead late in the 3rd quarter. So I finally gave up on it and tuned into some of the closer games. A little while later, I saw a score that said Titans 35-Texans 36. WHAT???? I shot back over to catch the Titans kick the FG to win, but I had to find out what happened. So I recorded the Short Cuts version (no timeouts, no huddles, no commercials) of the game that night to see what I had missed. Despite having only gained 42 yards in the 9 possessions I had watched, the Texans scored TDs on drives of 70, 98, 75, and 66 yards to take the lead. The strangest part was that during this comeback, they threw an INT and lost a fumbled punt, yet still managed to score 4 TDs. To me, it’s inexcusable that the Titans let them back in. I mean… first of all, they the Titan D gave up big pass plays down the field late in the game. What were they expecting the Texans to do, run the ball? And secondly, look at the Titans offense. With a huge lead, they had 4 consecutive 4th quarter possessions wherein they ran only 14 plays, gained only 37 yards, and took only 5:47 off the clock. 5:47 in 4 possessions when you have a big lead? That’s terrible. Sure, in the end, the Titans won, but they won by 2, despite winning the turnover battle 6-2, and they needed a last second FG to get the win. That’s not good. Thank God For Mississippi

A saying that is usually used to exemplify Arkansas education, can now be used to describe Razorback football. It seems so long ago that the Razorbacks were atop the West and in control of their own destiny, but after 3 straight blown 4th Quarter leads, Arkansas was sitting 0-3 in SEC play. That was until Ole Miss rolled around on the schedule. Read the rest of this entry »

Religion, Sports, and Politics
