Cutting the roster

NFL teams have to cut their rosters to 53 by Saturday afternoon. Let’s take a look at how the Cowboys can get their roster down from 74 to 53.

First let’s get the specialists out of the way. Obviously, the team has to keep a long-snapper (L.P. Ladouceur), a punter (Mat McBriar), and a kicker (it looks like Nick Folk will beat out Martin Gramatica for that position.) It’s possible the Cowboys could keep both kickers, but I doubt they will. I’d cut Gramatica. His salary is bigger, he’s older, he wasn’t as consistent as Folk in preseason, and he’s injured. Folk was decent on kickoffs and perfect on everything else. So that’s one cut. We’ve got the roster down to 73.

Now let’s look at defense. Read the rest of this entry »

Preaseason thoughts: Round 3

From a casual fan’s perspective, the preseason is now over because the next game will be largely an exercise in staying healthy. Starters probably won’t play more than two or three series for most teams. But to the avid fan, this is the time when you see the last-ditch efforts to secure a roster spot. It’s amazing to think about…. some of these guys on the bubble are gonna be making $250,000 a year, some will be on the practice squad, making about $80,000 a year, and some will be flipping fries for a few bucks an hour. And the difference between the guys on the roster and the guys at McDonalds might be nothing more than dumb luck. I mean, if somebody misses a tackle and you break a long run for a TD, then you made a play in the clutch, and that might be enough to keep you on the team. Or if someone misses a block and gives you an easy sack, that might just keep you in the league. Crazy stuff.

But let’s get to what we’ve seen in preseason. Read the rest of this entry »

Heisman Run

The only other Razorback Heisman run that I had the pleasure of experiencing was that of Cedric Cobbs. The difference between Cobbs run and that of McFadden is that Cobbs had zero national hype, and very little local hype. It wasn’t until about the middle of his senior season that the University of Arkansas pushed his Heisman candidacy. Arkansas almost missed the bus on McFadden last year, but luckily Darren’s natural ability was able to hype itself. Read the rest of this entry »

(pre)Season of Surprises

Two weeks ago, I said that the Arkansas Razorback’s toughest opponent would be injuries. I was partially correct with the injuries of Marcus Monk and TE Ben Cleveland being huge downfalls, but there was another unknown I forgot to figure in… Read the rest of this entry »
