Disappointing Rangers

Sportsdate 7 – 1 – 2009

No this is not going to be another of those the heat is here so the Rangers are folding columns. I will leave that to the sports commentators in the Metroplex. This is more personal. I wrote a piece a couple of months back about going to see the Rangers. I praised the franchise for finally getting it. Much like on the baseball side of operations, the business side takes a step forward and two steps back in the ever going Texas Rangers two step. Read the rest of this entry »

Farren Out As Gunslinger GM

Sportsdate 10 – 1 – 2008

Frank Snyder owner of the Texarkana Gunslingers sent out a press release this afternoon informing us that David Farren would not return as the General Manager of the team. In a short statement Snyder praised Farren’s enthusiasm, but felt important issues to the team had not been settled by Farren. Read the rest of this entry »

My March Madness

Sportsdate 3 – 25 – 2008

As a sports fan I know that I am supposed to be looking at my brackets over and over again these days. I did not even fill out a bracket this year, I rarely do. This March as I have every spring since 1972, I find myself instead paying more attention to what is going on with the Texas Rangers spring training. Read the rest of this entry »

Striking Out With TC Baseball

Sportsdate 3 – 9 – 2008

It seemed like a good idea. I cleared the deck of Sunday afternoon activities to head over to George Dobson Field to take in Texarkana College’s baseball double header this afternoon. It was a beautiful day in Spring Lake Park. The kind of day Ernie Banks would have most assuredly wanted to play two. Read the rest of this entry »

What was the Point, Rog?

I like Roger Clemens. I really do. But I am totally missing the point of his releasing that tape of the conversation with Brian McNamee. It didn’t do a thing to make him look innocent, and it contained a couple of things that made him look guilty.

First off… it was obvious that Roger was trying to avoid saying certain things because he knew he was being taped. That alone made him sound guilty. Then, to make things worse, McNamee sounded totally candid, which made Roger’s careful words seem even sleazier. At no point did McNamee seem like he felt he had done Roger wrong in any way. If you had just committed a heinous, public slander against one of the greatest sports figures of all time, could you call him on the phone and act like you had never done anything wrong? Pastime Past Prime

Here we are, another baseball season and “America’s favorite pastime” is once again down in the count.  With Barry Bonds on the precipice of shattering Hank Aaron’s home run record while still being able to maintain a healthy drug habit, it’s hard to believe but, yes, it just MIGHT be time to juice those baseballs again.  After all look how the Home-run race between Sammy “corky” Sosa and Mark “juicebox” McGuire brought back all those fans that the sport lost during the strike.  The sport’s popularity is fading fast and, given the direction that America’s sports fans seem to be leaning, it just may be on the way out.  While the older generation seems to still be re-living the ‘ol glory days with every game, today’s sports fans have too many choices that provide them instant gratification to sit down and enjoy the beauty of a 3-hit 1-0 ballgame.  One of the biggest problems is that baseball’s non-contact nature provides very few “in your face” highlights that seem to dominate American sports culture.  When was the last time someone sent you an email with a video of a guy clipping the outside of the plate to send someone back to the dugout?  Chances are, if you DID get a baseball video from someone, it was probably a fight.  We could blame violence in movies for this trend if we wanted to, or we could just realize that fans today want to be entertained on a minute to minute basis.  They don’t want to sit down and watch something develop.  That’s why “The Rock” is now more of an icon than “The Rocket” and why baseball may just be past it’s prime.
