Internet Returns, But Gunslingers Will Not Tonight

Sportsdate 5 – 14 – 2009

My apologies to any readers left out there for not having posted anything for over two weeks. My home internet connection has been nonexistent for the last ten days. The good folks at my local phone company have finally figured out the problem. It may have simply been a case of giving the world a break from one more blogger for a couple of weeks. That would be at least one public service being provided by my phone company.

I was all jazzed to attend this evening’s opening night for the Texarkana Gunslingers at Spring Lake Park. The morning rains have proved to be more than the already soaked field at the park could handle. So if the rain ever stops the local nine will return to action sometime this weekend against last year’s CBL Champion, the Bay Area Toros.

I know for some the prospect of independent league baseball is not very alluring in our age of electronic communication, but after no internet for ten days I have gotten use to a more simple life without the stream of constant information and ideas. I hope you the readers of this blog have not.

Gunslingers Schedule

Sportsdate 3 – 6 – 2008

If you go to www.texarkanaprobaseball.com you can now click on the schedule for the Texarkana Gunslingers baseball team. I must admit that seeing the schedule got me more jazzed than the annoucement of the team name. Reading Louie Avery’s piece in the Gazette today about local players at La Tech, and then the reference to the Gunslingers at the end reminded me about something. We have many of the ingredients in Texarkana to make this work.

We have the local talent, and the love of the game of baseball in this area. You don’t get four really solid high school programs without kids growing up still playing baseball. That is not happening through out the rest of America.

We can make this thing work with a little faith. I just hope the same spirit exists in McKinney, League City, and Corpus Christi.

Triathlon Sunday

This Sunday is th 11th annual Four States Triathlon. I talked to Mike Riley this afternoon who spearheads the event, and he explained the Texarkana event is a Sprint Triathlon. A 650 yard swim is followed by a 13 mile bike ride, and a 3 mile run.

The event begins at 8:00 am at the North Shore (Cripple Childrens) Landing at Lake Wright Patman. The bike ride will cross the spillway. Mike says the water temperature is still cool enough that it will be legal for swimmers to don wet suits. He implied that any advantage one receives in floatation help is canceled out by trying to get out of the wet suit back on shore before hoping on the bike.

Chirstus St. Michael Health and Fitness club along with Team Texarkana are sponors of the event. The public is welcome to attend. Don’t look for the many of the Blog Board to be competing, unless Steve Campisi’s bike skills are being utilized.

San Jacinto Ends Bulldog’s Season

5 – 15 – 2007

Texarkana College fought back into the championship game but came up short against San Jacinto College tonight. After a first round loss, TC had to battle back through the losers bracket of the Region 14 Baseball Tournament. They would have had to defeat San Jac twice to win a trip to the National Junior College World Series. In game one this evening the Bulldogs lost 11 to 5.

Interim Coach Chad Massengale will bring his troops home to Texarkana, and see if the team’s showing was enough for Texarkana College to drop the interim title. Under the circumstances, I think Massengale warranted an opportunity to be given the job full time.
