The Anti-Gordon

Sportsdate 4 – 5 – 2009

For about a dozen years I have been attending NASCAR events. I came to the sport at a time when Jeff Gordon was dominating. During the last dozen years I have seen Gordon race in person about two dozen times in Cup races, and in Busch / Nationwide events. The one thing I have come to count on is that if I am in attendence, Jeff will not be be headed to victory lane. Read the rest of this entry »

Jr. Says Good-Bye to DEI

It has happened.  Dale Jr is expected to announce on Thursday that he is leaving DEI at the end of the season.  DEI, if you don’t keep up with NASCAR, is Dale Earnhardt Incorporated and the name isn’t a coincidence.  So why would Dale leave is father’s company?  His stepmother has controlling interests in the company and she is unwilling to give it up.  In her defense, it is the company that she and Dale Sr. founded and built from the ground up, but it is a crying shame to see a son get kicked out of his father’s footsteps.  The next question that immediately comes to mind is, “You mean SOMEBODY ELSE is going to be driving the Bud-mobile?”  That is what lawyers are for (I had always wondered).  Budweiser apparently has a clause that lets them out of their current contract (good through 2008) if Jr does not drive the No. 8.  Bud is expected to follow Jr. to his new Nextel Cup team . . . Jr Motorsports.  JR Motorsports has been focused on the Busch Series up to this point but will now make the jump to the Nextel Cup.  DEI temmate Martin Truex Jr. is supposedly leaving to join JR Motorsports as well.  It gets even better; the word is that Jr. will still be driving a Chevy, but the chassis and engine will be made by the mildly succesful Hendricks Motorsports.
